*** Update on Austrian Literary Agent ***

E-mail from my Austrian Literary Agent:

Dear Mrs. Sandor!

Thank you for keeping me informed. You are doing a lot of communication and networking for the book. Tomorrow, I have an appointment with a big publishing house in Austria. They have the online version of "Through Innocent Eyes" and maybe there is a chance to get a German version of your story.

best wishes
M.H

Being considered as a contributing writer for a magazine........

I just submitted this to be considered as a contributing writer for a magazine.  I would like to hear your thoughts.

My passion is writing and my personal area of expertise is the life span development of German/Austrian Country Service girls raised during WWII. With the pervasiveness of television and the proliferation of technology today family role models are continually influenced by forces outside the home.  The main emphasis of "Through Innocent Eyes" focuses on the moral character development which is positively influenced by inductive discipline. This involves the use of reasoning and focuses the adolescence girl’s attention on the consequences their actions have on others within their family, group, and community.  I stress the importance of how their behavior, thinking, and reasoning, contributes to developing their identity.  However, this goes beyond other aspects of character development.  I provide the reader the opportunity to become one with the main character, Gertrude Kerschner, and a look into her behavior and thinking.  My twenty-three years of intermittent research into the European upbringing of children, inclusive as how my mother raised me, is written throughout "Through Innocent Eyes.”  Here, I want to teach self-awareness, self-discipline, self-reliance and to build one’s self-worth and self-confidence with integrity.

D-Day Conneaut, Ohio - Book Signing Event - August 16-17, 2013 - Overview

D-Day Conneaut, Ohio - Book Signing Event – August 16-17, 2013 - Overview

This was the first time I participated in such a large Living Historical WW2 event - D-Day, in Conneaut, Ohio, overlooking the beautiful bluffs and beaches of Lake Erie.  I portrayed Fraulein Dieter, troop leader of Landjahr Lager based upon my book “Through Innocent Eyes – The Chosen Girls of the Hitler Youth.”  Over 20,000 spectators came to watch over 1000 re-enactors commemorate the 69th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy.

It started on Friday morning with the flag raising ceremony in the center main field and the Sherman tanks firing over the upper eastern bluff.  The event continued with the flag raising ceremony by the Memorial Wall and by noon with the WWII Veteran's private lunch. All day long, rides were being given on the Higgins Boats, which would later be used by the soldiers the next day for the beach invasion. I felt a deeper sense of connection with our soldiers who used similar boats to invade the beaches in Normandy, and those who had lost their lives. As people were mingling around both camps, and talking with the re-enactors, bombers and planes were flying overhead and the Road to Victory Battle took place at mid-park on Grove St.  The ladies were enjoying their morning tea and fashion/makeup class and show, as the vintage vehicles were lining up in the lower pavilion. This was followed by the open house at the future D-Day Museum at the church (corner of Lake Rd and Harbor St.)

The following day, the Veterans told their personal stories as the Allied and Axis camps once again welcomed the tours.  I was in the German PX selling my book "Through Innocent Eyes."  I received many warm welcomes from my readers who stopped by for an autograph first print edition copy and speak with me.  In the afternoon, I had to move my table behind the PX before the Marquis attack/La Fiere-Bridge Battle begun in the lower park.

As I stood up on the hill, thousands of rounds of blank ammunition went off, with the thunderous roar of the tanks gaining control of the bridge.  As the narrator explained the event over the loudspeaker, the men were fighting and vying for control.  Some 'played dead' as others continued to fight.  I was impressed with their re-enacting skills for one soldier jumped over the creek and landed right smack in the middle.  As he crawled out, his body was covered with mud.  Another was shot in the neck and fell helplessly to the ground.  Tears slowly started running down my cheeks when I watched the soldier grabbed his neck, pretending to hold back the blood as it was gushing out from his neck, draining the life force from his body. His body rolled back and forth from side to side until it slowed and stopped. His arms went limp alongside his body and he was (play) dead. I got chills only to think about our soldiers on the beach sixty-nine years ago, and how the sacrificed their very own lives for our personal freedom!  Afterwards, it took me a little while to regain my composure.  My father fought the Germans in WW2 and I could only image what he witnessed.

There was a reprieve in the events until last seating was called at 2:30 for the main beach landing event.  At 3:00 pm, the epic drama of the Beach Landing Battle commenced as 20,000 spectators watched the invasion. Our camp was completely deserted except for a few of us who stayed behind to watch over each others' camps.  At the end of the battle, the crowd roared in applause.  It was time for the camps to close, and the vendors to start packing up. A few companies remained on site until Sunday.   I volunteered and help to pick up what little garbage remained on the park grounds.

The evenings were full of excitement with an outdoor showing of the movie "Casablanca," the USO-style dance show, a 1940's Evening in Paris, and the German re-creations show in the Bier Garten.

There were so many more events that I cannot list them all here. Each tent recreated a little part of history based upon the re-enactors own personal interests.  Believe me; I was very impressed with the authenticity.  Some re-enactors spend in upwards of 10’s of thousands of dollars to re-create living history.  Commemorative items were for sale in the military PX tent/building in the upper and lower parks.  I hope each and every one of you was able to walk away with a little piece of history.

Next year, on August 22 - 23, 2014, this same event will commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the D-day landing, which will also be http://www.ddayohio.us 's  - 15th anniversary.  And when that happens, I'll be there!

I want to graciously send a special thank you to the following people for their continued education, dedication, commitment, and underlying support to make this event possible:

2013 D-Day Board of Directors:

Betsy Bashore - CEO
Lori McLaughlin - COO
Jennifer Palagyi - CFO

Lisa James - Director

and to all the Sponsors and Veterans.  I also need to thank Lisa James and Dan Merske for the gracious hospitality.  It was also a pleasure meeting Deanna Fleischmann - Assistant Director at Villa at the Lake, Donna the manager of the Railroad Museum, the Conneaut Historical Society, Executive Director, Nancy Pape and her assistant Cindy, from the Conneaut Public Library and to the hundreds of people I met during my two day visit including, Lisa James, Dan Merzke, Molly Hoffman, Nancy Lare, Betsy Bashore, Lori McLaughlin, Heathyr Haskins, Bernadette Crumb, Jeanne Onuska, Christine Albin, Al Parents, Bill, Craig from the OKW group, Unit Commander - Ted O’Sullivan, Jen from Brighter Horizons, Paul Fischer – The German Cultural Society of Erie, PA, Gary Weltlich – VP of Auld Crafters & Associates, and Drew from 1994 Militaria,   I thank each and every one of you for stopping by the German PX and purchasing an autograph copy of my book.  It was a pleasure to meet you and hear your own personal stories about your family!  I look forward to next year's 70th Anniversary D-day event!  Keep up the fantastic work everyone!  God Bless You All!

****** UPDATE: Austrian Publisher *********

*** UPDATE: AUSTRIAN Publisher ****

How many people are really, really interested in seeing "Through Innocent Eyes" printed in German? I just received a response back from the publisher in Austria and they told me that they just finished reading the entire book and they love it!

Now, the next step is to do what is called a feasible study - this is where a company does research to see how many people would really be interested in buying a copy of the book in German if it were available.

If I could so kindly ask all of you who are really, really interested, to please click 'LIKE' and share this with your friends, then, I can pass the information along to the publisher.

Thank you very much!

Andres from Austria - Book Review

I received a very nice email by Andres from Austria that I would like to share with you.  He said:

“Cynthia A. Sandor brings history to life without sacrificing accuracy. She is significantly breaking new ground by chronicling the hidden history of the emotional toll that World War II exacted on the Bund Deutscher Mädel (BDM) girls who participated in the Landjahr Lager (Country Service Camp) program, and those who loved them.  I did not think there was anything good or fresh to say about the Hitler Youth to the modern world and Sandor has proven me wrong---very wrong indeed.  This is such an important and engaging piece of work that should become a valuable part of WWII history.  Thank you for writing “Through Innocent Eyes – The Chosen Girls of the Hitler Youth.”

Marco from St. Polten, Austria said:

"Dear Cindy: I just finished reading your book "Through Innocent Eyes - The Chosen Girls of the Hitler Youth" and I want to let you know that I liked reading your book because for me, (and for the other people living here for whom I told them about your book ) the historical circumstances, poverty and hardship, and the effects of the propaganda machinery are in part not new as a lot of facts came to my notice during history courses and especially the stories told by older generations living in this area. This is what made the book come alive for me. For me, you actually met the spirit of the people and of that time frame 1931 - 1941. This book is very valuable in that you documented the facets, not only of your mother and your family, but for many other JM and BDM girls, who today, are still alive and in their 80's. Those elderly women who live in Kleinzell still to this day, remember your mother's kindness and compassion and they are very happy to hear her story come to life in your book. I am so grateful that you added the general impression to a broad audience with your documentation, whereas the interesting stories told from many grandparents have vanished for consecutive generations as they are not narrated without interruption, nor were they documented such as your mothers. I wish you all the best of success on your book! Sincerely, Marco."

Book Review "Through Innocent Eyes - The Chosen Girls of the Hitler Youth"

Here is another comment I received from "D" ......

Your book sounds fantastic! There are too few books that have been written portraying the Germans in anything other than a horrible light. I suppose one of the spoils of war is that you get to write the history after you have won the war. I have and always will consider myself a German. I find it heart warming that someone such as yourself is willing to tell a story like this! The general masses have been brainwashed into a belief that the NSDAP taught nothing but hate which is not the case as you so well have written in your book. I will continue to believe in the strong German work ethics, their love of their land, and their loyalty to their country, which is proven until this day. I will believe this up and until my death. I have found myself rambling, but my point is this: I thank you WITH ALL MY HEART for writing your mother's biography and having the guts to go against the accepted view. I have read the preview in Google books. I have purchased my book and I look forward to reading it! Thank you again for your valuable contribution to German/Austrian history. "D"

My dear Cindy. You are truly a professional. Everything is done to perfection. I am a slow reader, but what I have read so far is just so good. It brings back many memories to me of my sisters who were at the BDM and I a young girl to admire them. I was ten when the war ended and much to my disappointment, the war was over when  I had just joined the Hitler Jugend. --- You will do well with this book I am sure. ---- More later with much love, "L"

BOOK REVIEWS

MF from Illinois said "I am very appreciative of your work to dispel this myth. It is very intriguing that you took all of this historical information from your mother, and by the way, my condolences, and put it all in to a literature piece of art. I read the sample of your book on Barnes and Noble, on the internet. I am already drawn in. Haha. I will have to purchase this book and read it in its entirety in the near future. Things are a little tight with the economy right now. But i would like to purchase an actual copy of this book. I would rather spend the extra to get a copy with your signature. This had to be quite of a lot of dedication and work to contribute to to complete. It is a much appreciated work, as far as a am concerned."

Zither Music

My mother used to play the Zither.  I guess that is why I naturally gravitated to the concert piano and guitar when I was younger.  When the movie for "Through Innocent Eyes" is released, I very much would like Lotte Landl to play the background music.  Here is her web link.  She even played the Sydney Oprah House!  You go girl!

Here is her web site:  http://www.lottelandl.com/

And, here is where you can see her play:   http://www.youtube.com/user/lotte1935/videos?view=0

Thank you for watching!

Mathew said: "Hi, I heard your radio interview on Deanna's show and I bought your book on Amazon today look forward to reading it. All the best!"

Nancy said "Cynthia- loved the book so much I didn't want it to end!! Of course I have lots if questions but one in particular was, why was Josefa taken and beaten when Trudy was 10? Was it because they didn't have a photo of hitler in the house? And who told on them, the youth leader or Josefa 's friend? Anyway I loved it so much and hope you will come to Ft Worth or close by so I can get my book signed. This was excellent as far as history goes too! Even though these kids couldn't really be kids and things were harsh for them at times, they still managed to enjoy life!"

Stephen said "Great radio interview! I will post this on my wall for others to listen to!"

Trevor said "Head your interview!  Thank you for writing your book!"

Comments on First Radio Interview with Deanna Spingola

COMMENTS:

In the meantime, here are the comments that are just starting to come in!

Jim P said: "Heard your interview on Deanna Spingola's show. Wow! What a story. It was a special message for me to hear today. Can't wait to read it. God bless your mom."

Karen R said "You're mom sounds like she was a great lady!  Thank you so much for sharing her story with me."

Marie D said "I've never heard about Landjahr Lager before!  My grandmother was in the BDM. She's not around anymore, but I will ask my mother.  I'll get your book today and read it too!  Thanks for sharing!"

H.N. from You Tube wrote: "Congratulations on your book! I just picked up my copy at Barnes and Noble. I also requested my local library to get it in. I have not read any of it yet,but it looks delightful to those of us interested in that very unique time. Judging from the chapter titles---"Walpurgis Night" and so forth---I think you will transport back in time to those days, and let us experience it just like those girls did! i became interested in the BDM myself years ago..and have done a certain amount of research on the subject. However, most books on the BDM are either pejorative or give short shrift to the subject,or are overly scholarly. I think your book will be a refreshing change!"

From J4G:  The highly propagandized and demonized "HJ" was not the nefarious youth brainwashing organization as always portrayed in mainstream literature. According to my first-hand sources who were in it, they were taught useful life skills, survival and conservation skills, positive social values, morals, honor and personal discipline, duty and community service, pride in their racial and cultural heritage, respect for others, respect for their environment, as well as, about the propaganda utilized by the enemies of Germany. Not violence and hatred! It was only late in the war with all fronts collapsing were some given hasty training in the use of weapons for self-defense and resistance, particularly against the advancing Red Army in eastern Germany, as well as with air defense stations. They also reinforced education, the goal was to be educated as well as being physically fit and developed. ~ J4G

Marie H. from Palm Harbor, Florida said:  "I just finished listening to your radio interview. It's great, I enjoyed it. You did fantastic! More power to you! Great job! You, you keep up the good work w/ your book. You'll get there. I have faith in you. I've send the link w/ your radio interview to everyone I know : ) I'm proud of you & you are really fantastic talking & being interviewed, being able to hold your own ground : ), not sounding nervous. You are a pro! May peace and love follow you always!"

T.L. Said " Hi Cynthia!  I am listening to your radio interview on Deanna's show.  I have been teaching myself true history for a few years and waking up to all the lies about WWI and WWII. I love your interview and you are awesome! God bless you and the memory of your wonderful mother.  What an amazing story, so important on so many levels."

Insights about "Through Innocent Eyes - The Chosen Girls of the Hitler Youth"

I have been receiving many comments on my Facebook page about my mother that I would like to share some thoughts with you.

Even though my mother is gone and lives in heaven now, it is a small tribute to her that I can write about her life's story...... maybe, a part of me still misses the times we could have had together. Or maybe it is because my mother had such an impact on my life? I do not know. She taught me so many things in life and I listened to her! For instance, one time she said "Cindy, forget about what it costs. See the world while you are young! Look at me, I saved all my life to travel around the world and look at me now. At the age of 61, I am dying from cancer and will not be able to make my dream come true. Make all your dreams come true for what ever you put your mind to doing, you can accomplish!" And I did! There is so much that I have accomplished in my life.... I have traveled to 20 countries and into over 400 cities! I listened to her when she said "buy stocks and real estate." Why? Because, she was in the Board of Directors office as their 'server' because of her excellent work ethics of being a waitress! My mother was privy to standing in the same room as the CFO, CEO, President, Vice President, etc, to the head honchos for American Can Company back in the '70's and 80's. She stood in the room, kept her mouth shut and listened to what they were saying... and she heard and she shared it with me! Money is not everything. It's how many people's lives you can touch while you are alive ~ what I can share with those around me. I've jump out of a perfectly good airplane twice, broke my leg in the process, and kept moving forward! The deaths of my parents, having cancer twice, a divorce and breaking my back in two place due to a motorcycle accident could not keep me down! Life is short. One day I woke up and saw these beautiful 20 year old models in a tv commercial and I thought... "where the hell did the time go?" I am now 52 years old! I hold a Master's Captain license to pilot a 100 gross ton vessel, 200 miles off shore, anywhere in the world, became a Travel Channel graduate where they used some of my short video pieces on their tv show, produced my own television shows, and wrote for various magazines, including an article which is now unavailable in the "SS United States Fastest Ship in the World - 50th Anniversary" book by Turner Publishing. And really, what does it all come down too? How much money you make? No. Having the biggest house on the street? The fancy car? No! I believe the secret is to learn a little bit every day and before you know it, you have learned a lot and can share this with your friends. I value each and everyone of you as my friend. I hope when you read "Through Innocent Eyes," you will see what I learned, from my mother, who learned this while she was in the Bund Deutscher Maedel. Now, with this said, can you really tell me that the Hitler Youth was all that bad? I would LOVE to know everyone who's parents was in the HJ and have them share their moral character standards with me. We must live with an in integrity for then only can the world become a better place! Love you all! Thank you for reading!!!!!!!  ~ Cindy ~ Hopeful #1 New York Times Bestseller - Historical Non-Fiction Author!

Happy New Year to everyone and I want to thank you so much for your interest in Gertrude Kerschner, and "Through Innocent Eyes - The Chosen Girls of the Hitler Youth!

This year is getting off to a fantastic start.  As a new author, the response to "Through Innocent Eyes - The Chosen Girls of the Hitler Youth" is overwhelming!  It is amazing how fast the word is spreading on the internet, especially with Facebook and the WWII re-enactment groups.

My Facebook page is: Cynthia A. Sandor.  Many people are requesting signed copies of the book.  Autograph copies of the Hard Covers are selling for $48.00, and the soft covers are $34.00 (includes shipping and handling in the United States). Overseas shipping include an addition $20.  Therefore, if you live outside of the United States and want a hard copy of the book, the cost is: $68 and a soft copy will cost $54.00. Until I set up my pay pal account, please send a check to the following address:

The first print run of the Hard Covers has a very special spine which is not available on the paperback copies of the book.  And those of you who currently have a hard back copy of the book, take off the dust jacket and take a look at your 'unique surprise!'

In addition,  I am planning on doing a book signing at the Dade Battlefield event on March 2 - 3, 2013 in Bushnell, Florida. For more information, please visit my event page on Facebook.  Thank you everyone for your interest and I look forward to meeting your personally!

Or, if you'd like to, you may purchase the book from one of the links above (at the top of the home page) and a copy will be mailed to you directly.  I'll sign it once I catch up with you at one of the book signing events!  In the meantime, if you have any questions, or comments, please feel free to sign up below and email me anytime!
