Reichs Youth Leader Baldur von Schirach about HJ and BDM

Reichs Youth Leader Baldur von Schirach about HJ and BDM

Every boy wants to become a man and every girl a mother.

I believe in comradeship between girls and boys, not a comradeship in which one always crouches together, no comradeship in mutual confession, comradeship in mutual action…. the relationship between HJ and BDM requires mutual respect. The Hitler youth boy should respect the BDM girl or go to hell. If we can't do this, how can we be the future?

As the boy strives for strength, so the girl strives for beauty. But the BDM does not subscribe to the mendacious ideal of made-up and external beauty, but strives for that honest beauty, which lies in the harmonious formation of the body and in the noble triad of body, soul and spirit. The generation that wants to be the German future needs heroic women. The BDM is supposed to produce those proud and noble women who, conscious of their highest worth, want to belong only to their equals.

Girls in Service - The Official Handbook of the Bund Deutscher Mädel - English Translation

Trude Mohr, the National Speaker of the Bund Deutscher Mädel, together with other prominent BDM leaders wrote this inspirational training manual originally titled "Mädel im Dienst." Being a BDM girl was never more exciting than with this new program of resources. Eye opening activities from self-defense, sharpening the senses, and intelligence service compliments the physical exercise, home evenings and practicalities the girls would learn. In this English version, publisher and author Cynthia A. Sandor shows how the girls were educated in camaraderie, discipline, and preservation of their race. The BDM used campfire romanticism, summer camps, folklore, traditions, and sports to instruct the girls and to train them for their roles in German society, becoming a wife, mother, and homemaker. The purpose of these activities was to promote good health, which would enable them to serve their people and their country. Translated from German by Vera Filthaut. Published by BDM History.
